From Osaka or Kyoto

Hiroshima is 90 minutes from Osaka by bullet train, Miyajima another hour beyond. A long day, and one most people say was worth it.

You can see Hiroshima and Miyajima in one day from Osaka or Kyoto, and plenty of people do. The Nozomi bullet train covers Shin-Osaka to Hiroshima in about 90 minutes and Kyoto in about 100. The catch is everything after: a train to Miyajimaguchi, a ferry, the island, back to the city, the museum, then the train home.

That makes a 12 to 14-hour day. Below: the trains and what they cost, which passes help, how the H.I.S. and JTB tours compare with going alone, and the case for one night in Hiroshima.

The quick answer

Yes, it works as a 12 to 14-hour day. A reserved Nozomi seat costs about 10,950 yen each way from Shin-Osaka (11,940 from Kyoto). With a JR Pass, Nozomi needs a 4,170-yen supplement each way, or take the Hikari for free. A DIY day from Osaka costs about 24,000 yen. Tours: H.I.S. by shinkansen and coach with lunch (about $283 from Osaka) or JTB with reserved seats and a licensed guide ($387 from Osaka, $391 from Kyoto).

The Peace Park is a tram ride from Hiroshima Station; the island is another hour on.

Can you do Hiroshima and Miyajima in one day from Osaka or Kyoto?

Yes. Leave around 7:00 to 8:00, spend three hours on Miyajima and three in Hiroshima, and you are back by 20:00 to 22:00.

A workable DIY timeline from Osaka:

TimeStep
7:00 to 8:00Nozomi from Shin-Osaka, about 90 minutes
9:00 to 9:30JR Sanyo line to Miyajimaguchi (about 25 to 30 min), ferry 10 min
10:00 to 13:00Miyajima: shrine, Omotesando, lunch
13:30 to 14:30Back to Hiroshima; tram or bus to the Peace Park
14:30 to 18:00Peace Memorial Museum, A-Bomb Dome, Children's Peace Monument
18:30 to 20:00Okonomiyaki dinner, Nozomi back to Osaka

Going to Miyajima first catches the island before the afternoon crowd peaks and keeps the museum, which stays open to 19:00 from March to November (18:00 in winter, museum hours), for later. Swap the order if the tide table puts the floating torii in the afternoon: see the tide guide. Shinkansen run until late; the last ones toward Osaka leave Hiroshima in the 21:00 hour.

How long is the bullet train to Hiroshima, and how much does it cost?

About 1 hour 30 minutes from Shin-Osaka and 1 hour 40 from Kyoto on a Nozomi. A reserved seat costs about 10,950 yen one way from Shin-Osaka and 11,940 from Kyoto.

Standard-season fares, one way per adult (fare table):

FromNozomi reservedNon-reservedHikari reservedNozomi time
Shin-Osaka10,950 yen9,890 yen10,420 yenAbout 1 h 30 min
Kyoto11,940 yen10,770 yen11,300 yenAbout 1 h 40 min

Peak dates cost a little more and off-peak dates a little less. Buy the return ticket with the outbound one so you don't queue twice, and if your plans may slip, a non-reserved ticket lets you take any train.

Is the JR Pass or a regional pass worth it for the day trip?

Not for a single trip. A round trip by Nozomi costs about 21,900 yen, while the 7-day JR Pass is 50,000 yen. The Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass (17,000 yen for 5 days) pays off quickly.

If you already hold a Japan Rail Pass, it covers the Hikari and Sakura to Hiroshima, the JR train to Miyajimaguchi and the JR ferry. The Nozomi needs a special supplement ticket, about 4,170 yen each way from Shin-Osaka (Nozomi supplement prices), bought at a station before you board. The Hikari saves that and costs you about 10 to 20 minutes.

Without a nationwide pass, look at JR West's Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass: 17,000 yen for five consecutive days, covering reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima (not the Nozomi), trains around Kyoto and Osaka, and the JR Miyajima Ferry. One Hiroshima day trip and two Kansai days already beat single tickets. The 100-yen visitor tax is never covered.

DIY, H.I.S. or JTB: which day trip from Osaka or Kyoto?

DIY is cheapest at about 24,000 yen from Osaka. H.I.S. (about $283) adds a guide, a coach and lunch. JTB ($387 from Osaka, $391 from Kyoto) adds a licensed guide, reserved seats and the visitor tax, but not lunch.

Our DIY figure: two Nozomi reserved seats (21,900 yen), the JR train to Miyajimaguchi and back (840), the ferry (400), tax (100), shrine (300), museum (200) and trams. H.I.S. costs a little more than DIY plus lunch and saves you all the planning. JTB is the premium: a guide who meets the train, and an assistant who walks you from the hotel to the platform.

What is the H.I.S. day trip from Osaka like?

Twelve hours: a shinkansen to Hiroshima, the A-Bomb Dome and Peace Memorial Museum, an okonomiyaki lunch, a coach to Miyajimaguchi, the ferry, the shrine and free time on Omotesando.

Partner listings give the start as 7:50 at Shin-Osaka, where staff hand out the shinkansen tickets. One guest: "From the first meeting point with bullet train ticket distribution to the guide herself, no detail was missed." The guide speaks English; the Multilingual plans add an audio guide in 21 languages that works on the bus only, so bring your own phone and earphones. Lunch comes in a regular, no-pork, or no-pork-no-fish-no-egg version; tell them when you book.

Expect crowds and a long day. A guest in October 2026 called it "a big day, 14 hrs from Osaka". Another wrote, "It's a long day but worth the journey. Check for local holidays before booking." Good advice: Japanese holiday weekends overwhelm both sites.

What does the JTB bullet train tour add?

Reserved shinkansen seats, staff who take you from Hotel Granvia Osaka to the platform, a National Government Licensed guide from Hiroshima Station, and every fee including the visitor tax.

No one rides the train with you; the guide waits on the platform in Hiroshima and stays with you through Miyajima and the Peace Park. JTB uses the JR ferry's Otorii route when it runs. Lunch isn't included, and the tour needs at least two bookings four days ahead or it may be cancelled. Children up to 5 ride free on a lap. From Kyoto, the same tour starts at the Sunrise Tours desk in Avanti B1F, across from Kyoto Station's Hachijo exit, for $391.

Guests like having it all handled. One wrote: "All the entrance tickets I.e the subway ride, Bullet train ferry, museum etc were all included in this package. I would highly recommend it if you're willing to spend the extra." Complaints point the other way: a few wanted more time in the museum and less on the island, which is the weak spot of every one-day combo.

How do you plan the day yourself?

Book the shinkansen early, travel light, check the tide table, and keep the museum for the afternoon. Leave Osaka by 8:00.

  • Luggage: leave it at your hotel. Coin lockers at Hiroshima Station and Miyajimaguchi can fill up on busy days.
  • IC card: ICOCA or any major IC card works on the JR train, the trams and the JR ferry gate.
  • Museum: early entry (7:30 to 8:30) and late entry need an online reservation; normal daytime entry doesn't. Allow 90 minutes at least.
  • Tide: pick the order of the day from the tide table.
  • Return: sit-down okonomiyaki near Hiroshima Station, then any Nozomi back.

Should you stay overnight in Hiroshima or on Miyajima instead?

If you can, yes. One night lets you see the torii lit up, the island before the day crowds, and the museum without watching the clock.

Sleep on Miyajima and you get the island at its quietest: the evening light-up, the night cruise through the torii, and the shrine at 6:30 with hardly anyone around. Sleep in Hiroshima and the Peace Park gets a full afternoon. Hiroshima Prefecture added an accommodation tax on 1 April 2026: 200 yen per person per night when the room rate is 6,000 yen or more (details). With a night in town, a local guide for a full day makes sense: Japan Guide Agency's private day is the most reviewed tour on this site.
