Miyajima in one day

One day on Miyajima, start to finish: the shrine before the crowds, oysters on Omotesando, a temple on the hill, and the torii lit up after dark.

Miyajima rewards an early start more than almost anywhere in Japan. The coach groups arrive around 10:30, fill the shrine and Omotesando until mid-afternoon, and leave on the 16:00 ferries. Before and after, the island is quiet.

This plan assumes a full day from Hiroshima, with the option of staying for the evening. Move the blocks around to match the tide on your date.

The quick answer

Take the first ferries (6:25 or 7:05 from Miyajimaguchi) and see Itsukushima Shrine at 6:30 to 9:00. Walk Omotesando at 9:00 for breakfast snacks, then Daisho-in and Momijidani. Ride the ropeway up Mt Misen around 11:00 if the day is clear. Eat oysters or anago-meshi late, around 14:00. Come back to the torii at low or high tide, and stay for the light-up after sunset. Don't feed the deer.

What is the best one-day itinerary for Miyajima?

Shrine first thing, then the town, the temple and the mountain, a late lunch, and the torii again at the tide you missed. Stay for dusk if you can.

What time should you catch the ferry to Miyajima?

The first JR ferries leave Miyajimaguchi at 6:25 and 7:05; from 8:10 they run every 15 minutes. Aim for one before 8:00.

From Hiroshima Station, the JR Sanyo line takes about 25 to 30 minutes to Miyajimaguchi; leave by 6:30 for a 7:05 ferry (JR ferry timetable). Pay the 100-yen visitor tax at the machine. The shrine opens at 6:30 all year and closes at 18:00 from March to mid-October, 17:30 to the end of November, 17:00 in December (shrine hours). Coming back, ferries run every 15 minutes until about 18:40, then less often until the last at 22:14.

How long do you need at Itsukushima Shrine?

Thirty to sixty minutes for the shrine itself, longer with the Treasure Hall. Entry is 300 yen, 500 with the Treasure Hall.

The one-way route takes you along vermilion corridors over the water, past the main hall and the noh stage, and out the far side. The floorboards have gaps, on purpose, so the sea can pass through in storms: no high heels. The five-storey pagoda on the hill is under conservation work until November 2027, though its scaffolding is due to come down in December 2026. The East Corridor is being reinforced until December 2026 and stays open. Details in the repairs post.

The torii itself has no scaffolding: its restoration ended in December 2022. Above the shrine, Senjokaku, a huge hall begun under Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1587 and never finished, costs 100 yen and is a fine place to sit.

What should you eat on Omotesando, and how do you handle the deer?

Grilled oysters, anago-meshi (conger eel on rice) and momiji manju, the maple-leaf cakes. Eat at the stall, not on the move: the deer will take your food.

  • Oysters: Hiroshima Prefecture farms more oysters than any other in Japan. Grilled in the shell on Omotesando all year, best in winter.
  • Anago-meshi: grilled conger eel over rice cooked in eel stock. The dish was made famous by Ueno, a shop next to Miyajimaguchi station that has served it since 1901; expect a queue at noon.
  • Momiji manju: sponge cakes shaped like maple leaves, filled with red bean, custard or cheese. Try one fried on a stick.

The island's sika deer are wild. Hatsukaichi City banned feeding them in 2008 to send them back to the forest, and unlike Nara, nobody sells deer crackers. They still eat paper: maps, tickets, receipts, shopping bags. Keep paper zipped away, don't eat walking through the crowd, and give stags with antlers some space in autumn. They will stand in the middle of the street; walk round them.

Oysters and momiji manju: the two snacks everyone tries.

Should you see Daisho-in and Momijidani before or after lunch?

Before. Both are quiet until about 11:00, and Momijidani leads straight to the ropeway if you plan to go up Mt Misen.

Daisho-in is a 10-minute walk uphill from the shrine and free to enter from 8:00 to 17:00. Climb the steps spinning the prayer wheels, find the rows of jizo statues in knitted caps, and the lantern-lit cave under the main hall. Then cross to Momijidani Park, the maple valley behind the shrine, especially fine in mid to late November.

Is Mt Misen worth it on a one-day visit?

On a clear day, yes: allow three hours with the ropeway. In haze, rain or high wind, spend the time in the town and on Omoto Park instead.

The ropeway (2,000 yen return) runs 9:00 to 16:00 and gets you within a 30-minute walk of the 535 m summit. Reikado Hall near the top burned in May 2026; its flame survived. Fares, trails and the fire are all in our Mt Misen guide.

How do the tides change the plan, and is the evening worth staying for?

Check the tide table first: put the shrine at the high tide (over 250 cm) and the walk to the torii at the low (under 100 cm). Then stay for the lit torii if you can.

If the high comes in the afternoon, reverse the day: temple and mountain in the morning, shrine after lunch. On some days the low tide never drops under 100 cm, so don't plan on the walk without checking the official table. Our tide guide reads real October 2026 days for you.

After sunset the torii and the shrine are lit until about 23:00 and the island goes quiet. Aqua Net's 25-minute night cruise (2,000 yen, cash, book two hours ahead) sails through the torii at high tide, from 17:55 to the last trip at 21:15 (night cruise). The last JR ferry back leaves at 22:14.

Yes for the shrine, the town, Daisho-in and Mt Misen. Staying overnight adds the lit torii and the quiet early morning.

What time does Itsukushima Shrine open?

6:30 every day. It closes at 18:00 from March to 14 October, 17:30 from 15 October to November, 17:00 in December and 17:30 from January to February.

Can you feed the deer on Miyajima?

No. Feeding has been banned since 2008, and no deer food is sold. Keep paper and snacks out of reach.

When are Miyajima's crowds worst?

From about 10:30 to 15:00, on weekends and on Japanese holidays. Autumn leaves in November and Golden Week in early May are the busiest times.
