Japan Guide Agency · Hiroshima

A private day with a licensed guide

A government-licensed guide meets you on foot at your hotel, station or cruise pier and spends eight hours with only your group, by train, tram and ferry. Pick it for the Peace Memorial Museum and the tides: you stay as long as you like, and a local times Miyajima around the water.

Private Hiroshima and Miyajima Day, Licensed Guide

About this experience

Japan Guide Agency matches you with a National Government Licensed Guide Interpreter, the national qualification for guides working in foreign languages. You choose three or four sights from a short list: the Peace Memorial Museum, Hiroshima Castle, Shukkeien garden, Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine. The guide sends a plan by email or WhatsApp before the day, meets you on foot (hotel lobbies, Hiroshima Station and the cruise terminal all show up in reviews) and stays with you for eight hours.

With 1,593 reviews it's the most reviewed tour on this site, and the reviews keep coming back to two things. The museum: you can stay two hours instead of the 30 to 45 minutes coach tours allow. And timing: a good guide puts Miyajima first or last depending on the tide table, so you see the torii standing in water. Guests also mention lunch spots they'd never have found, a favourite ramen shop, a calligraphy store and okonomiyaki straight off the griddle.

Now the price. $200 is a per-person figure at the cheapest tier, which you only reach with a bigger group; a couple pays more per head, a family of five less, so enter your real group size on the booking page. The fee buys the guide and nothing else. You pay your own fares, the ferry at 200 yen each way, the 100-yen visitor tax in cash, the 300-yen shrine ticket, the 200-yen museum ticket and lunch. On trains and trams that's about 2,300 yen per person before lunch, more with taxis.

  • Only your group, with a nationally licensed English-speaking guide
  • You pick 3 to 4 sights: Peace Museum, castle, Shukkeien, Miyajima, the shrine
  • As long in the Peace Memorial Museum as you need
  • Meets you on foot at your hotel, the station or the cruise pier
  • Wheelchair and stroller accessible, according to the listing

What guests say

★★★★★

Knowing the tides wait for no traveler, he whisked us straight onto the local train and ferry to Miyajima. We caught the iconic torii gate rising out of sparkling high-tide waters, then lingered long enough to watch the sea retreat as low tide crept in, revealing the shrine's grounded, earthen bones.

Our tour of Hiroshima and Miyajima with Nori was fantastic! He was extremely knowledgeable and answered all our questions with ease. His English is excellent, making communication seamless throughout the day. He was also very flexible and easily adjusted our itinerary on the fly when needed.

We saw and learned things we would not have if we went on our own. Mai also took us to a wonderful lunch sport and place for tea and treats on Miyajima at local places we likely wouldn't have stumbled into.

The Peace Museum was somber experience and brought the reality of the bomb to light. We enjoyed the shrine and shopping and food on the island. All transportation is an additional cost. We used taxis and ferries. It was raining and we wanted the fastest means. Our guide, Akie, was excellent.

Tips before you book

  • Get an IC card (ICOCA, Suica or PASMO) before the day. A guest recommended it, and it saves fumbling for coins on every tram.
  • Ask the guide to plan around the tide. Water above about 250 cm gives the floating look; see the tide guide.
  • Carry 100-yen coins for the visitor tax: it's cash only on this tour.
  • Cruise passengers: agree the end point and the all-aboard time in writing. One guest was left at the high-speed boat pier and had to find the way back to the ship alone.
  • Taxis between sights save time in rain, but you pay them. One reviewer used taxis and ferries all day.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a private Hiroshima and Miyajima guide cost?

$200 per person is the lowest tier on the listing, reached with a larger group; smaller groups pay more per head. On top come fares, ferry, entries, the 100-yen visitor tax and lunch, about 2,300 yen per person before lunch if you use the JR train, tram and ferry.

Is transport included on the Japan Guide Agency tour?

No. It's a walking and public transport tour with no private vehicle. You buy your own tickets; an IC card makes it easy. Taxis are fine, at your cost.

Can we choose what we see?

Yes: 3 or 4 sights from the Peace Memorial Museum, Hiroshima Castle, Shukkeien, Miyajima and Itsukushima Shrine. Guides plan with you by email or WhatsApp before the day.

Does it work for cruise passengers?

Many reviewers came off ships. The guide meets you on foot at the pier, but agree the return time and drop-off point clearly, since you travel on public transport.
